Head of the Housatonic 2024 – Junior Women’s Eights Preview

The Junior Women’s Eights at this year’s Head of the Housatonic promises to be an intense early-season showdown, with several top-tier crews looking to set the tone for the season. Among the key contenders are RowAmerica Rye, Greenwich Crew, and Saugatuck Rowing Club, all entering multiple boats, alongside other highly competitive programs from across the country. This race, covering 2.3 miles, will give crews a chance to set the standard for the rest of the fall season.

RowAmerica Rye

RowAmerica Rye are the reigning Junior Women’s Eights 2023 National Youth Championship champions having also obtained a confident victory at last year’s Head of the Charles Regatta (HOCR). Known for their large and competitive programme, they’ve dominated the U.S. Junior Rowing scene in recent years. Their win at last year’s Head of the Housatonic makes them favourites to defend this title, and as the first crew to start, they’ll look to lay down a time that puts pressure on their competitors. With the HOCR just weeks away, RowAmerica Rye’s athletes will be keen to use this race as an opportunity to reinforce their position at the top, aiming for the ‘three-peat’ next weekend.

Greenwich Crew

Greenwich Crew, another top Junior Women’s programme, is also bringing significant depth to the Head of the Housatonic, having entered three competitive crews in this category. Moreover, they will be looking to take down the current champions, having had a successful summer season their athletes will be eager to showcase their hard work over the summer here at one of the fall opener. The rivalry between Greenwich Crew and RowAmerica Rye is set to be one of the highlights of the event, as both clubs have proven themselves capable of winning on the national stages and making a name for themselves across the pond.

Saugatuck Rowing Club

Saugatuck Rowing Club, a program that consistently challenges the top ranks of junior rowing, placed third in the 2023 National Youth Championships and fourth in 2024, so show much promise going into this race. They will be looking to close the gap on RowAmerica Rye and Greenwich. Known for their aggressive race starts and steady mid-race pacing, Saugatuck will be a formidable opponent for the other leading crews.

Alongside these top programs, other clubs such as Princeton National Rowing Association/Mercer, and Port Rowing will also bring fast boats to the start line, looking to make their mark early in the season.

Prediction

The Head of the Housatonic will serve as a preview of what’s to come in the Junior Women’s Eights field. Crews will not only battle for the win but also aim to make a statement to their rivals ahead of the season’s most competitive events. Spectators can look forward to fast, tactical racing, with each crew eager to start their fall season with a confidence booster, but I expect RowAmerica to come home with the gold.
