The Head of the River always poses a challenge even for the most experienced crews. Therefore, a good result here from a beginner academic crew will certainly be a highlight of their season and should help them gain a huge amount of confidence as they look towards competitions such as BUCS Regatta in the summer.
Liverpool University BC
Just looking at their recent performance at BUCS Head, where they placed second in Men’s Beginner Eights, Liverpool will certainly be looking to taking the win in this category. It will certainly be interesting if they do perform well here how they then transition that longer distance pace into speed over a 2km course.
Imperial College London BC
Imperial came fourth at BUCS Head but with the race on home soil and a bit more experience of the Tideway then the rest of the competition, they should have to confidence to put in a very competitive time.
Others
Just looking at the recent results at BUCS Head there are a few others who might be in the mix: York, UEA, Bath, Sheffield and Nottingham. Who deals best with traffic and maintaining the best line will likely decide the order here. It will be interesting to see if any of these crews makes a big step on from where they finished at BUCS Head.
Prediction
One of the hardest parts of predicting beginner events is that beginner crews can make enormous improvements between competitions and completely change the form book. I expect strong performances from Liverpool and Imperial while I could certainly see a crew from the likes of Bath or Nottingham making a step forward.
