Head of the Trent 2018 – WJ18 4x- and W4x-

Few crews are entered into the WJ18 4x- event with many clubs favouring the W4x- event. Therefore, in this preview I am taking a look at both events by picking out some of the junior crews in the W4x- event to go along with the preview of the crews racing WJ18 4x-.

Nottinghamshire County Rowing Association – Richards (WJ18 4x-)

There are no past results available for this quad, however NCR has been having a lot of success with their juniors this season. Most recently, the club has seen six of their junior girls do very well at the February junior GB trials, with two of the crews taking first place in their trials. It will be exciting to see how the crew does on Sunday.

Warrington Rowing Club – Stanhope (WJ18 4x-)

Warrington juniors have being doing very well in recent times. This quad most recently won at Northwich Head, claiming the title of fastest women’s crew, and reached the semi finals at Henley in 2016, losing out to the Headington crew. The club has also sent multiple juniors to GB trials in recent years, demonstrating a strong level across the squad.

Bedford Modern School – Rowe (WJ18 4x-)

Similarly, BMS have been performing very strongly over the past seasons. The quad came second at the 2017 Bedford Regatta and second also at the 2018 Bedford Fours and Eights Head. Most recently they won their race at the 2018 Cambridge Head to Head. These results suggest that this crew is in with a strong chance of coming in the top three at Head of the Trent.

Star Club – Wardley (WJ18 4x-)

It was difficult to find much information about this crew for their recent races, however they were the crew that pipped the BMS crew to the win at Beford Fours and Eights, with a very respectable time of 7:16, suggesting that they will perform just as well in the coming race.

York City Rowing Club – Forde (WJ18 4x-)

Though there isn’t much information about this crew, York quad most recently raced in W4x- at the 2017 Head of the Don, and at the York Spring Regatta, where they lost their final by two lengths. However, the York juniors appear to have done rather well over the past season, especially at the Durham Regatta, where they took impressive wins in the WJ14 1x and 4x.

Yarm School Boat Club – Anderson (W4x-)

Once again, it proved difficult to find many results for this crew. They have previously raced at the 2017 Head of the Don, and came third at the 2016 Strathclyde Park Regatta. Given this information, it will be interesting to see how the Yarm crew do against their competition.

Kings School Chester – Moir (W4x-)

Kings Chester have a strong tradition of producing top level rowers, with many alumni having raced in The Boat Race, and others making National and even Olympic squads. Members of the quad racing this weekend attended the Wales U18 trials for a seat in the Welsh Rowing Team, and Moir also took part in the 2014 GB Early ID Assessments. I would imagine that with this in mind, the quad will do well in their category.

I would imagine that the crew to beat in the WJ18 4x- event will be the Bedford Modern girls, with the Warrington and Nottingham crews also performing very strongly.
