This weekend is the Head of the Trent, and this category looks to be an exciting one due to the competitive field entered here. These crews will be looking to establish themselves ready for the larger races of the season which feature WJ16 quads, such as the Schools Head and Junior sculling head
Warrington RC
Leading the field will be Warrington, who in recent years have developed an incredibly strong junior women’s sculling squad. If this strength and depth is reflected in this crew then they should be well in contention for the win. Warrington’s WJ16 scullers had some strong performances at the most recent GB Trials, finishing 9th and 11th in the WJ16 category, and while haven’t been attending many of the bigger races recently picked up a win at the Head of the Float. They’ll be gunning for the win this weekend and definitely have the potential to deliver.
Becket RC
Becket have developed an talented junior squad for a newly established club, and the WJ16s are no exception. After winning the WJ16 2x at Hampton Head by 13 seconds, this quad should be well up there at the top of this field, and presuming it contains these two scullers will be the crew to watch. I can’t seem to find any other results from this crew, but judging from the standard of crews from Becket this quad should be right in contention for the win.
Bedford Modern School
Bedford Modern are another school who have an established rowing scene, and this crew recently came 13th in the WJ16 4x at Hampton Head. While this is no standout result, these girls may have the experience in crew sculling and will be looking to be competitive with the rest of the field.
Also to watch out for will be Royal Chester, Grange and Oundle, who haven’t posted any notable results recently but may still be in with a chance this weekend.
My prediction for the win will be either Warrington or Becket, both appear to have the talent and potential in this age group and it will be exciting to see who can produce the best result.
