Founded in 1991, HSOBC is the school rowing club of Headington School based in Oxford. The club currently rows out of St Edwards Boat House upon the River Thames and has squads operating within every year from J12 up to J18.
Headington’s current rowers have access to a range of facilities alongside the boathouse such as an ergo room and fully equipped gym as part of the school’s sports facilities. They also have plans to build their boathouse in the future further down the River Thames in Long Wittenham. The club puts great emphasis on producing successful athletes and substantial academic success to set the rowers up for a strong university career and future. Headington put a large focus on developing their club culture and building a robust environment around training and a shared club ethos and goal.
Over its 20 year history, Headington School has seen many incredible successes within rowing and has seen 120 athletes competitively compete for Great Britain. The club has produced many notable alumni such as the three-time olympian Catherine Greves, Lily Van Den Broeke the 2012 Paralympic Gold medalist coxing the mixed four, and Fiona Gammond. She is currently on the Great Britain Olympic squad. The club has also seen a range of strong performances produced by their athletes for example between 2009 and 2017 Headington consecutively won the Girls Championship Eights at the National Schools Regatta and more recently in 2019 a finalist quad in the Diamond Jubilee Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta where they also saw their first-ever alumni eight compete in Remenham Challenge Cup.
The whole of Headington’s boat club community came together during the first lockdown to compete in weekly challenges such as distance and altitude competitions seeing rowers, parents, staff, and alumni all come together to contribute and compete against each other. Despite there being no regatta season last year, the summer also saw Headington athletes seize the opportunity to compete against other clubs in the Henley Virtual Championships where they raced on the ergo or running different over a week legs of the Henley course and then on the final day the total racing distance.
