After the recent cancellation of the ever popular Hampton Head, Henley Fours and Eights is, for many the first real chance since Quintin Head to see how they face a race situation. J16 is seen as a formative year in a junior rowing career as it is the springboard into the top echelons of the events. In terms of the J16 8+ category, there is a modest 4 boat entry here who all will want a kick start a push towards Schools’ Head which is now looming on the horizon with a win here.
Hampton School BC
Two entries here from Hampton, with one which I fear may raise a few eyebrows amoungst readers. The first under the name of “Ham and Cheese” is fair enough but the second, under the name of “Ham and Pickle” will no doubt split opinion…surely its got to be cheese..? Anyway, I’m here to look at the rowing, not crew names so looking at Hampton’s season thus far it would be foolish to rule any of these crews out of the running. At Quintin Head, a single Hampton entry placed 8th and they no doubt will be looking to build on this here, though mixed crews will be interesting to gauge the depth of the J16 squad.
Shiplake College BC
One of the most established names on the junior rowing scene, Shiplake had a fairytale year with their J16 crew last year qualifying for the Temple Challenge cup. Shiplake know how to producw fast crews at this level and again this year looks to be no exception to this.
