Henley Fours and Eights Head 2023 – Junior 16 Women’s Quads Preview

One of the first races after Christmas, this event has some familiar names to the Junior circuit and some less well-known clubs. WJ16 quads are a competitive event where there is a mixture of experienced and well-drilled crews, combined with those who are relatively new to the sport and are gaining valuable race experience before regatta season.

Henley Rowing Club

A name that is well-known and well-respected in junior women’s sweep and scull, their J16 crew took the win at Hampton’s head last weekend by a 3s margin in a category full of high-calibre athletes. Henley RC has proven that they are coming to every race with the right mindset, evidenced by wins at Quintin Head, and Fours Head in the quad and both fours. The quality of athletes Henley has produced over recent years they are sure favourites to take this event.

Thames Scullers RC

A club just north of Wallingford, the home of Oxford Brookes and Wallingford RC, comes a more unknown entry to the Junior circuit but are perhaps one to watch out for, with a strong 2nd at Wycliffe Head in December 2022, they will want to come in and shake up the status quo for Henley RC which is no small feat.

Predictions

A small entry of only 6 boats, the stage looks set for Henley RC to take another win in this event, yet I don’t want to rule out the possibility of a smaller club coming in and creating a massive upset for a titan in Junior Women’s Rowing.
