The event was cancelled after this preview was completed.
3000m for a big boats head might seem like light work, but racing upstream on the Thames, with the Henley stretch’s prevailing headwinds, could call for some serious effort. The men’s Junior 18 quads will be no exception; we can expect to see some excellent performances at the home of UK rowing this weekend.
Junior 18 men’s quads are always one of the most competitive junior categories, especially as we move into the head season. Crews are coming together to target silverware and medals in the summer.
Marlow Rowing Club
While many clubs seem to have been stunted by weather conditions so far this season, Marlow has enjoyed their fair share of success. Seven of their junior men trialled in November, their men’s Junior 18 doubles brought home fourth and 11th, respectively, at Pairs Head, and last weekend, the Junior 18 quad won the silver medal at Wycliffe Big Boats Head. Strong results can be expected from both Marlow quads on Saturday.
Bewl Bridge Rowing Club
Training on a reservoir is likely to have worked in Bewl Bridge’s favour this winter. Not being subject to fluctuations in river levels will have allowed the club to benefit from considerably more water time than most, and there’s a high chance that their two entries into this event will enjoy some success, particularly that featuring Tyrrell-Clarke, a bronze-medallist in the Junior 16 double at the National Schools’ Regatta’ last summer.
Leander
It would be hard not to predict success for Leander, the UK’s oldest and arguably most successful rowing club, in a head race on their stretch of river. Their Junior 18 quad from last season took home fifth place from the National Schools’ Regatta’, and their second quad won a silver medal in their respective event. Leander’s success record is never-ending, and their home-water knowledge will certainly be advantageous.
Prediction
I don’t think anybody would be shocked to see a Leander victory this weekend. Marlow could also be in the running for a podium position, with crews from Bewl Bridge, Molesey, or Lea Rowing Club
