A short race for Head standards, this weekend we take a break from the relentless action of the Tideway to journey west along the river to return to the heart of British Rowing: Henley-on-Thames for the 2023 Henley Fours and Eights Head. Only 3000m down the Henley course, there are only 3 entries this year in the Junior Women’s eight category.
Henley RC
Henley have undeniably kicked off the season with a bang, most recently winning the WJ18+ events at both Quintin Head and Hampton Head. However, with a large pool of J18 women this year and a crew entered into the Open Women’s category, it is uncertain whether the crew entered in this event is the 1st or 2nd Henley 8+. Either way, it seems they will be up against tough competition on their home water.
Shiplake College
With a sharp focus on their J18 girls this season, Shiplake planted themselves firmly in the running after a close 3rd place at Quintin Head, beating out many other top crews including Henley’s 2nd eight. This event will test their tactics, to see if they can adapt their strength and endurance for this shorter race.
Llandaff
Llandaff are perhaps the underdogs coming into this event. One of the oldest clubs in Wales, this crew are yet to appear on the board this season leaving their prospects wide open. While it’s unlikely they’ll be able to knock these top crews off their stride, it is no doubt these strong ladies will give them a good run for their money.
Predictions
With only these three crews competing it seems Henley are primed for the win on their home water, with Shiplake challenging them closely and Llandaff coming in 3rd. However only time will tell how things will shake out this year on the Henley course.
