In the spotlight this weekend with a sweep-focused programme (though there are sculling events too), the 3,000m course of Henley Fours & Eights Head will play host to an array of clubs, schools, and universities as they continue to put the miles in throughout this year’s head season. Often overshadowed by the furore surrounding the eights, I have no doubt that the eight crews entered into the Women’s Coxed Fours this year will nevertheless prove that small boats are always worth watching.
Marlow RC
Ever a high-performing club that often sweeps up their competition, Marlow deserves its status as a dominant club in the southern racing scene. This women’s four will undoubtedly be on the hunt for a win, and they certainly have a strong chance of living up to their expectations.
Southampton University BC
With three Southampton crews entered into this event alone, I wouldn’t be surprised if at least one of them gave Marlow a good reason to race. Perhaps overlooked in the university rowing scene, Southampton are clearly putting the miles in this year and developing a highly competitive squad, perhaps worthy of places back at Henley for the Women’s or Royal regattas in the summer.
Norwich RC
Former home club of women’s sweep standout and Leander and GB athlete, Samantha Redgrave, I am interested to see whether these Norwich women continue the strong female legacy of their club. Perhaps considered an underdog in this field, their starting position just behind Marlow will undoubtedly fuel their fire for a high octane chase down the track.
Predictions
This event is a great opportunity for all these women to continue their upward trajectories into the remainder of head season. With a mixture of club and university crews vying for the top spot, I have a feeling that Marlow might just edge it this time, with at least one of the Southampton University crews on their tail. That being said, it remains all to play for, as the likes of Norwich, Reading, East Anglia University, and Warwick University might cause disruption to Marlow’s winning streak on the day. I look forward to the outcome of an ever competitive category.
