Henley Fours & Eights Head 2023 – Open Coxed Fours Preview

A great event to warm up for some of the bigger head races, Henley Fours and Eights Head is back for another year. An interesting mix of ages, clubs and rowing history should give for some interesting racing.

Shiplake College BC

One of the top rowing schools in the country, Shiplake College have two entries in open coxed fours, one of which is stroked by Seric Critchley. A highly talented rower, Seric represented Switzerland at the Junior World Championships when he was only a J16. He is one of the few remainers from last year’s first eight. Shiplake’s other coxed four is stroked by Nick Summerfield, who was in last year’s second eight. Both of these crews should be fast, and therefore hard to beat.

Southampton University BC

Training on the River Itchen, Southampton University have two entries in Open Coxed Fours. Southampton have produced some solid results at events such as BUCS Regatta in the past, and regularly qualify an eight for the Temple Challenge Cup. Having two crews entered could also give a nod to the depth that this programme is producing.

Marlow RC

On home water, and with a good string of results behind them, Marlow will be looking to put out a top performance. With a large number of entries across the head race from the club, this may or may not be a top crew. Founded in 1871, Marlow has produced some rowing legends such as Steve Redgrave, Katherine Grainger, and has numerous Henley wins. One thing this coxed four won’t be lacking, is inspiration.

Oriel College BC (Oxford)

One of Oxford’s premier colleges when it comes to rowing, Oriel College BC will be making a rare trip away from Boathouse Island this weekend. Founded pre-1828, Oriel have more Headships than any other college. As to how this speed and history will translate to rowing on the Thames at Henley, only time will tell.

Prediction

It’s hard to look past Shiplake College for the win. The sheer amount of talent in those coxed fours is difficult to ignore. I would expect Marlow to finish in third place, followed by Southampton and Oriel.
