Henley Sculls is raced over 3km down the famous Henley reach that hosts Henley Royal Regatta each summer. The course has a long tight corner to start off with, then down the famous Henley stretch to let athletes clock seconds down on their time. Plus with this being quite a short race, the margins between crews are often fairly small. The J18 2x looks to be quite an open field, with a decent entry of qq crews, all of who will want a good row as coaches start to get more of an idea how their squads look this year.
Henley Rowing Club – Lamont
The crew of Ross Lamont and Finn ribbons look to be in poll position for the title of the J18 2x this weekend. This is coming off the back of the these 2 boys having an amazing Henley Royal Regatta campaign last season. With Ross making the move to Henley this season, he had an exceptional performance with Borlase last season at the regatta. This is similar with his crewmate Finn, where he knocked out Ross in a great Henley v Borlase battle on day 2 of the regatta. These lads also won at the recent Upper Thames autumn head at the end of August.
Wycliffe Junior Rowing Club – Garrard
Wycliffe, a rising prospect within junior rowing with having their girls quad getting a 4th place at National Schools last season and the boys getting into the C Final respectively. With their exceptional fleet of Hudson boats, I am sure these 2 lads will set a great mark against the crew of Henley.
Kings School Worcester – Beever
King’s School Worcester, another rising prospect in school rowing. With the club getting a quad and an 8 qualified for Henley last season, with the quad unfortunately not getting past Wednesday. In spite of this these 2 lads from Worcester will definitely show the depth kings have, as they come up against the finest junior Scullers on the Henley stretch.
Prediction:
Having all of these crews making Henley Royal last season, and the amount of skill they will have to navigate the Henley course, this is what I will expect this weekend:
1st – Henley Rowing Club – Lamont
2nd – Kings School Worcester – Beever
3rd – Wycliffe Junior Rowing Club – Garrard
