Radley College BC
Fresh back and ready to race again after their fourth place finish in Youth Coxed Fours at Head of the Charles Regatta, USA, McChesney, Innes-Ker, and Senior will have happy memories of the Henley course, where they were part of the British schoolboy crew that made it the furthest in the Princess Elizabeth. I believe these are the more stronger entries in this band and should be expected to place highly in the finishing order to generate good momentum leading into GB Trials in a few weeks’ time.
Latymer Upper School BC
This will be Latymer’s first race of the season, and it will be interesting to see what statement they make in the early part of the season. There are no results to go by for this group of five scullers, but I saw them out training on Wednesday battling each other, and they looked strong and capable enough to challenge for the higher end of the finishing positions.
Star and Arrow
What I consider to be the strongest sculler in this band, Devereux finished 3/41 at Reading Small Boats Head, and is going to be a capable competitor for the win come race day.
Wallingford RC
These two entries of Halsall and Robson is likely to be a breakup of the double that raced at their home Long Distance Sculls event which placed 6/16 in the J182x category. Seeing as most schools chose to enter their top boats as singles at Wallingford LDS, I do not expect them to challenge highly. However, it will still be interesting to see which one of these two is the fastest.
Eton College BC
Eton’s sole race so far this year has been at Reading Small Boats Head, where the majority of these Etonians raced in either the J17 or J18 singles categories. The highest finishers there were Carr-Middleton and Warley, both with strong placings in the top half of over forty entries. Can one of them win on Saturday? I doubt it seeing as there are stronger scullers in the first band, but they will still have a good placing in the field.
Bryanston School BC
Faced with what most rowers dread, having to do more than one race in one day, Kasimir Von Halem is going to have manage his recovery from racing in the double in the first division if he is to repeat his success of finishing third at Monkton Bluefriars Head.
There are no recent results for RGS Worcester BC or Hereford Cathedral School BC, I imagine they will be the lower placings in this category.
Prediction:
Devereux will be the highest finisher from this band in the overall category, followed by the top three Radley scullers. The midfield will be a mix of the Etonians, Latymer scullers and remainder of Radley. Toward the bottom we find Kasimir Von Halem from Bryanston School BC, Louis Kibble of Oratory School BC, and Hinksey Sculling School’s Will Wakefield, with RGS Worcester BC and Hereford Cathedral School BC rounding off the finishing order.
