Henley Long Distance Sculls is making its 2022 return on Saturday 5th November. It will be competed over a course of approximately 3000m that follows, in part, the world-famous Henley Royal Regatta course giving these young J16 athletes an early taste of this famous stretch of the Thames.
Maidenhead Rowing Club
Maidenhead RC has entered just one boat for this event. This crew look to be hoping to repeat their national success in the quad from their 2021/22 season. In no easy feat, they achieved 5th and 8th at Junior Sculling Head and National Schools’ Regatta respectively. With these results, Maidenhead looks like it will be a strong competitor for this event.
Great Marlow School Boat Club
Great Marlow has also had a largely successful 21/22 finishing 10th at Junior Sculling Head and 11th at National Schools’ Regatta. They have entered 2 boats for this competition and, if they can repeat last year’s pace (or better it), I would expect to see them fighting for a medal position on Saturday.
Tideway Scullers School
Tideway SS come into this event on the back following their previous season that saw them in very close competition with Great Marlow School BC, of whom they lost to by 0.6 seconds to take 11th at Junior Sculling Head. Following this, they went on to then beat Great Marlow by 2.02 seconds taking 9th place at National Schools Regatta. if this is anything to go off this could be hinting at a potential rivalry for this season to keep an eye out for. These results show that this will be a hard-fought race in which Tideway definitely can’t be written off.
Wallingford Rowing Club
Wallingford RC has also had a busy prior season in which they were often very close to other entries in this event. They finished 6th at Junior Sculling head, just behind Maidenhead RC and 7th at National Schools Regatta, this time narrowly beating Maidenhead RC. Having such close races last year, Wallingford RC will be looking to come out on top once again, this time on the Henley course.
Prediction
After lots of close competition between the competing crews last season adding to what will be an exciting event, I predict this race will be very close between the top crews but ultimately I believe Wallingford Rowing Club will take the win.
