Henley Long Distance Sculls is a great race, the course includes the iconic Regatta stretch and is a fantastic row, even in November weather. The entries include a lot more school crews than we’ve seen in recent races and a crew all the way from the Isle of Wight.
Henley
Henley have understandably come out in force for their own head race. There are 4 doubles racing in this category, and I have no doubt that they will all be highly competitive. Possibly the standout crew is Segrt and partner with success last season in an eight and a four. Knowing Henley though, I’m sure her club mates will do their best to make it a close race.
Sir William Perkin’s School
SWP has also entered 4 crews into this category and some of these girls raced doubles at pairs head to varying success. Adetola and Linney were both successful in reaching the podium at NSR last season. They also competed together to get to the quarter final of the WJ16 4+ at Henley Women’s Regatta. Wax had success in the WJ18 intermediate doubles at pairs head, coming home with 2nd place. These crews are ones to watch out for.
Wallingford
The double including Wilkinson has had moderate success in the early stages of this season, with a 4th at Wallingford Long Distance Sculls. We’ll have to see if they can make any improvements on this at Henley.
Queen Anne’s School
Queen Anne’s have entered two crews into this category, Webb competed at Wallingford LDS and came a respectable 8th. In her previous season, she competed in the Championship quad at NSR that got into the C final, so I have no doubt this crew will be looking to build on this result and improve this season.
ASL are fielding quite a few crews in this event and hopefully the historic surroundings will help their crews to obtain a good result. From the rest of the field I would highlight the two crews from Globe as potentially ones to watch. This is a prestigious club and their representatives are bound to want to uphold the high standards.
Predictions
This is an interesting one to call as there are quite a few new names in this category. Given their home advantage though, it’s difficult to argue against victory going to one of the Henley crews.
