St Paul’s School v King’s College School
Despite an extremely impressive start, getting up to rate 47 in the headwind, SPS were down at both the Barrier and at Fawley. Both crews were level coming off the island but KCS slowly began to inch away, gaining a lead that started from a canvas and extended to 3/4 of a length. Nevertheless, this second-half crew gave those sitting in the regatta enclosure a view to remember, overtaking KCS while beginning to rate higher as they wound to the finish, reversing their fate and winning by the 3/4 L they were once down by.
Radley College v Eton College
It seems that starting off steadier and making a push between the Barrier and Remenham is the way to make it to Sunday, a strategy that Radley too chose to adopt in a similar manner to their race against Teddies, which suited them well. Coming 7th at NSR, Radley knew changes had to be made to beat this Eton crew who placed first, and this was done by swapping two J16s into their Henley crew. While very few expected a PE Sunday without Eton, Radley are the ones who will move through into the last day of HRR ’22.

St Paul’s School v Radley College
Looking at times on paper, with Radley beating SPS to the line by 22 seconds, tomorrow’s result may seem obvious, but the British summer weather that we’ve been experiencing for most of this week has a huge part to play. While many of us prefer to row in the sun, the rain seemed to favour Radley, causing the headwind to die down potentially allowing them to set a faster time than they otherwise would have managed. There a suprising number of similarities between the Radley crew and the SPS crew: both managing a huge shift between NSR and HRR, having a young crop of talent in these boats with exciting potential, and – if today is any indication – race plans that call for a push around the same time. This all proves for a close and exciting race tomorrow, with the lead potentially swapping hands a few times before the PE comes to a conclusion. Based on the earlier days of this week, the Radley crew may face more Sunday fatigue which would play into the hands of the SPS crew, who could then finding themselves stealing the win.
