Henley Royal Regatta 2022 – Thursday Preview, Fawley Challenge Cup

Thursday Review:

Hereford Cathedral School vs Los Gatos Rowing Club, USA

This was the first junior race of the day and certainly did not disappoint. Los Gatos RC got out to an early lead and were half a length up by the time they reached Fawley. However, Hereford Cathedral School were rating three to four strokes a minute lower than Los Gatos RC which meant they were getting more distance per stroke and were able to come through in the last 500 metres, winning by a fairly comfortable two lengths in the end.

Hinksey Sculling School vs St. Andrew Boat Club

After a bit of steering off the start, St. Andrew BC edged out to a half a length lead by the end of the island which they then extended to three-quarters of a length. This distance was maintained down most of the rest of the course with St. Andrew BC never quite looking comfortable and Hinksey’s steering ultimately meant they were unable to close the gap to St. Andrew BC.

George Watson’s College vs Kingston Rowing Club

This was another close race which was only decided by one-third of a length, which was perhaps a bit of a surprise given that Kingston RC placed third at Marlow Regatta and George Watson’s College were fourth in the B Final. The crew from Kingston RC had a slight lead off the barrier which was extended to a length by the time they reached Fawley. George Watson’s College kept in contact and mounted a comeback but ultimately ran out of water.

Other Races:

In the other races, The Windsor Boys’ School ’A’ and The Dolphin Swimming and Boating Club, USA had fairly comfortable wins. Our ‘Road to Henley’ crew, Gippsland Grammar School, Australia, led early in their race with The Windsor Boys’ School ‘B’ but seemingly went too hard too early. The Windsor Boys’ School ‘B’ crew came through to win by a fairly comfortable margin.

Friday Previews:

St. Andrew Boat Club vs Hereford Cathedral School

This is likely to be a very close race. Hereford Cathedral School have evidently moved on since Marlow Regatta, but I think St. Andrew Boat Club will just be too good so I’m predicting them for the win.

Kingston Rowing Club vs The Windsor Boys’ School ‘A’

Kingston Rowing Club have the unenviable task of taking on The Windsor Boys’ School ‘A’. The Windsor Boys’ ‘A’ won the National Schools’ Regatta without their European Champion Sculler, Marcus Chute, and then went on to win Marlow Regatta by ten seconds. Therefore, I’m predicting them to win, and I think it will be a fairly comfortable margin.

Leander Club vs Claires Court School

Both these crews had very similar times to The Barrier and Fawley but Claires Court were significantly faster overall, but they were pushed harder by their opponents. Having said this, I believe they can get the better of Leander tomorrow.

The Windsor Boys’ School ‘B’ vs The Dolphin Swimming and Boating Club, USA

The Dolphin Club had the largest margin of victory in the Fawley today, but were slower to both The Barrier and Fawley than The Windsor Boys’ School ‘B’. I anticipate this being one of the closest Fawley races tomorrow with The Windsor Boys’ School ‘B’ just edging out The Dolphin Club.
