Henley Royal Regatta 2023 – Friday Briefing, The Diamond Jubilee Challenge Cup

Shiplake College ‘A’ v Wycliffe Junior RC ‘B’

Remaining a standoff throughout, the race between Shiplake ‘A’ and Wycliffe ‘B’ began with a side-by-side start. Although Shiplake edged out to take a slight lead, the race remained uncertain and tight. As the battle concluded, Shiplake made a substantial push to the end to take a comfortable win with plenty of clear water.

Wycliffe Junior RC ‘A’ v Sydney R.C. AUS

A moderately stronger start from Sydney began this side by side but it appeared that over time, Wycliffe would emerge as the more technical and powerful crew. Better able to deal with a strong headwind, Wycliffe came through their competition to take a lead they would build on throughout the race. The HWR and NSR champions then took a very impressive win which they will take forward with confidence into their semi-final.

Saturday Previews

Tideway Scullers School vs Shiplake College ‘A’

After knocking out who everyone expected to be one of the favourites for the event today, Tideway Scullers will look to replicate this result over the 2021 winners Shiplake College ‘A’. The most recent match between these crews was seen not too long ago with Tideway managing to have one over on Shiplake at HWR, a result I expect them to replicate on Saturday.

Wycliffe RC ‘A’ vs Henley RC

After knocking out the final international crew of the event, Wycliffe ‘A’ will be feeling even more so confident about their approach to the semi-finals day. Wycliffe has been growing from strength to strength in recent years taking the NSR and HWR win, this might just be the year that sees them lift the Diamond Jubilee Trophy. Despite what is a well-practiced Henley RC outfit that have also seen a strong season, it will be the surprise of the day if they manage to overturn crowd favourites Wycliffe.
