Henley Royal Regatta 2023 – Friday Briefing, The Prince Phillip Challenge Trophy

Winter Park USA v Melbourne Girls Grammar AUS

Off the back of their course record yesterday, Winter Park soon began to take an impressive lead over the Australian National champions utilising a higher stroke rate. In this highly anticipated race, this was a lead that the Americans were able to maintain. Although Melbourne was able to reduce this gap with a surge against their opponents, Winter Park remained unfazed and ended the race with a clear-water lead.

Deerfield Academy USA v St Catherine’s School AUS

Initially, an assertive start from St Catherine’s set them ahead of their opposition. Yet Deerfield persisted with composure shown throughout the crew. Hanging on throughout the race, Deerfield would then move through and produce some tense side-by-side racing. In a final sprint, this US crew then made clear water and took a formidable win.

Saturday Previews

Winter Park USA vs Deerfield Academy, USA

Henley Royal Regatta proves, that despite travelling across the Atlantic, you still may end up racing home competition. With Winter Park having set the first record of Thursday, albeit St Catherine’s whom Deerfield have now beat are now current holders and following two dominant races today, each crew will not be wanting to fall up short now, especially not this close to finals day. The result of this race will be reliant on race plan execution, responsiveness and ruthless rhythm. And after seeing how Winter Park raced today it will arguably be them to cross the line first.

Greenwich Crew, USA vs Headington School

With Headington having secured the first-ever win of the event back in 2021, they will be wanting to return this trophy back onto home soil and make it through to finals day after being the only domestic crew left in the competition. Greenwich Crew have been on form all week, however after multiple comfortable races Headington will be hitting this race feeling arguably fresher. Furthermore, following their successes this regatta season winning both NSR and HWR, I expect that we will be seeing Headington make their second appearance in the final within the three-year history of the event.
