Henley Royal Regatta 2023 – Friday Briefing, The Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup

Kings College School, Wimbledon vs Radley College

in the last PE quarter-final race of the day, all eyes were on the course as KCS took on last year’s finalist Radley. KCS attacked the race relentlessly doing their utmost to hold on to any kind of connection with Radley. However, Radley did not let this warrant concern. Despite being warned twice for steering and hence resulting in KCS closing the gap slightly, it was Radley who are going through to tomorrow’s semi-final leading by a length across the line.

St Paul’s School v Brisbane Boys Coll AUS

Thrilling bow ball to bow ball racing occurred when Brisbane boys took on National Schools silver medalists St Paul’s. Although Brisbane boys gained a slight edge ahead of their competition, the race remained close down the course and a prediction on the final result seemed impossible to determine. In the end, the might of St Paul’s strode through and took a clear and comfortable win taking them through to the semi-finals.

Saturday Previews

St Paul’s vs Shiplake College

In true St Paul’s fashion, they managed to defend themselves yet again from international competition in order to reach semi-finals day. Coming into tomorrow’s racing they will be wanting to repeat this winning streak in order to be in with a chance of defending their title from last year. Shiplake however, will be doing all they can to prevent this, after a strong series of rounds this week, culminating in their excellent race against Marin, USA today they will be wanting to make this trip across the Atlantic worth it which means at least making it to Sunday’s racing.

St Edward’s School vs Radley College

This race is sure to be the showdown of all showdowns when it comes to schoolboy eight racing. Teddies have been dominating the regatta season this year taking the win at the National Schools’ Regatta and so it will be interesting to see if this has been enough to beat Radley who are infamous for nailing down a successful Henley peak. As for Radley, they will be racing this knowing what’s on the line, having not won since 1998 and making the final last year, all the pressure will be on these boys to have a successful run.
