Henley Royal Regatta 2023 – Saturday Briefing, The Diamond Jubilee Challenge Cup

Tideway Scullers’ School v Shiplake College ‘A’

In the first Diamond Jubilee semi-final of the day, Tideway Scullers yet again proved their speed on this world-famous course. Given that this crew combination was only finalised after the National Schools Regatta, and contains J16 athlete Delevante, their progression into the final is all the more impressive. After knocking out Oregon Rowing Unlimited – one of the favourites for many in this event – yesterday, Scullers dominated today’s race against Shiplake College to secure their place in the final tomorrow. Despite receiving multiple steering warnings due to the challenging crosswind, they pulled clear water, providing them with all the confidence they need for the final.

Wycliffe Junior Rowing Club ‘A’ v Henley Rowing Club

As predicted yesterday, Wycliffe powered off the start and held a steadfast lead over Henley all the way down the track. Slick technique and unmatched power has been the recipe for success for the Wycliffe girls all season long. Battling the far-from-perfect conditions, they remained in command, leaving Henley unable to ask questions, let alone knock on the door. Cruising over the line, the Wycliffe girls have reaffirmed their status as the favourites to lift the Cup.

Tideway Scullers’ School v Wycliffe Junior Rowing Club ‘A’

After topping Schools’ Head, National Schools Regatta and most recently Henley Women’s Regatta, Wycliffe Junior Rowing will be the favourites going into tomorrow’s final. Neither of these clubs have ever won in this event, so inevitably they will both be hungry to make history for their programmes. With a quicker time in the semi-finals today, can the underdogs of Tideway Scullers continue to impress and build on this rapid form to steal away what is Wycliffe’s race to lose? I can’t wait to find out.
