Henley Royal Regatta 2023 – Saturday Briefing, The Fawley Challenge Cup

Reviews

Hinksey Sculling School v Los Gatos, USA

California dreamers Los Gatos had an aggressive opening to this race, taking an early – albeit short-lived – half-length lead. Settling into a lower rate pattern with a more efficient and technical stroke, Hinksey built back on this quickly, drawing in on Los Gatos and striding past them. Hinksey fell into a clean and tidy rhythm, each stroke pushing on the Los Gatos crew until they held clear water. Undeterred by a last minute Los Gatos attack, Hinksey cruised over the line to mark their place in the Fawley final tomorrow.

Leander Club ‘A’ v The Windsor Boys’ School ‘A’

This, one of the final races of a superb Henley Saturday, was good. Evenly matched throughout between two of the premier schoolboy sculling programs, this was edge-of-your-seat racing at its finest. With Leander leading the charge, Windsor Boys were constantly hot on their heels, and showed no sign of letting up. In a monumental final chase down past the Enclosures and Grandstand, both crews were neck and neck. By the hole in the wall, it was too close to call. In the end, Leander claimed victory on the line by three feet. That felt like a final on semi-finals day.

Final

Hinksey Sculling School v Leander Club ‘A’

With Hinksey having a very slightly easier semi-final run down the track than Leander, they will come into tomorrow with fresher legs. That said, we’ve seen time and time again what the Pink Palace are capable of, and if they pull off a performance even remotely like today’s, they will lift the Fawley Challenge Cup.
