Henley Royal Regatta 2023 – Saturday Briefing, The Island Challenge Cup

Reviews

Oxford Brookes v Durham University

The first semi-final for the Island saw a domestic rivalry play out, between Durham and Brookes. They took an early lead by the Island, and while the support on the bank was for Durham it seemed unlikely they would be able to hang onto Brookes, after Brookes had almost a  length lead by the barrier. The prowess of Brookes was on show, their comfortable rhythm something we see across the whole squad, which only comes after a decent lead. It shows a deep-rooted trust in their crew, and their program, which continues to produce top-notch results. The race ended with Brookes taking it through Stewards with an ‘easy’ win, despite Durham putting up a plucky fight – the results of which could be seen on their faces as they rowed past the press box.

Stanford University, USA v University of Pennsylvania ‘A’, USA

In an all-American semi-final we see the University of Pennsylvania vs Stanford, giving us an exhilarating race. We all expected Stanford, a university of great renown to beat UPenn after their results at NCAA spoke for themselves, however this just shows how variable of a sport rowing is. After gaining an early lead, and then edging out into clear water, UPenn led by 2 lengths to take the win by a fair margin –  one that no one could dispute. Sure we had somewhat agressive steering by UPenn, but it’s H.R.R. If there’s anything that you could do to win wouldn’t you? This strategy clearly worked for UPenn, as they will progress onto Sunday.

Final

Oxford Brookes ‘A’ v University of Pennsylvania ‘A’, USA

It should perhaps come at no surprise when I say this, but I back Brookes to win in the final. We just haven’t seen any actual competitive rowing from these guys because they haven’t really been pushed much this week. What a testament to their strength as a program and a squad. Whenever Brookes takes to the course there is a sense of inevitability and so far this regatta this crew has only further proved why that is. There’s a reason they have the reputation that proceeds them, and although some people may be rooting hard for the underdogs, it would take something very special from the Americans to turn over Brookes in this final.
