Henley Royal Regatta 2023 – Thursday Briefing, The Prince Albert Challenge Cup

Reviews

Imperial College v G.S.R Aegir, NED

In a  race that I thought would be closer than it was, it was the crew from Imperial that succeeded in this round. If you had turned off the coverage after the island you would have assumed Aegir were going to take the win, but by the barrier marker the lead had changed hands. Imperial kept their cool and took the Dutch seat by seat, rowing through them and extending their lead to a length and a half by the finish line

Adam’s House, Harvard University, USA v Brown University, USA

You have to wonder if these crews weren’t a little disappointed when they saw this side of the draw, they’re both from the east coast of America and will be familiar with each other, having raced together all season. That being said, the added prestige of Henley makes everything more interesting, and it looked evenly matched as they lined up. However, by the end of the island, the race had already skewed in the favour of Adam’s House. By the barrier, this was increased to two and a half lengths. It was safe to say the crew from Harvard executed their race plan neatly, and will advance confidently onto the next round.

U.S.R Triton, NED v Oxford Brookes University

Yesterday, I said that Triton would give Brookes a good race, as it turns out the boys from Brookes did what we’re used to seeing and confidently stormed down the course to take the win. While Triton gave it their best shot, pushing Brookes to the line and not letting them take the rate all the way down and paddle across the line, they still didn’t give them enough of a race to make the Brookes crew worry too much. They will continue into the next round as the favourites.

Previews

University of Washington, USA v Imperial College London

The Huskies once again had an uncomplicated race today, showing everyone watching exactly how afraid the competition really should be. Despite the prowess and talent in the Imperial boat, I doubt they have enough to turn over the Americans, it could however be an interesting race.

Oxford Brookes v Adam’s House, Harvard, USA

With another comfortable win under the belt for the crew from Brookes, they will line up at the island as the favourites in this race. Don’t discount Harvard though, as they had a very strong showing today against fellow Americans from Brown and have the potential to push Brookes a bit harder. Whether it’ll be enough to cause a big upset, we’ll just have to wait and see.
