Henley Royal Regatta 2023 – Wednesday Briefing, The Prince Phillip Challenge Trophy

Latymer Upper vs St Georges College

It was all eyes on the course as the first race of the Prince Phillip Challenge Trophy got underway with Latymer Upper Taking on St Georges College in race 10 this morning. It appeared that by the end of the island Latymer’s sharper start put them ahead but St Georges College were quick to mount a challenge back. Laytymer responded to this actively upping the rate to maintain a speed and rhythm that St Georges was just unable to match the speed of what looked to be a quite comfortable Latymer who lead across the line.

Wimbledon High School vs The Tideway Scullers’ School

A race of sheer grit and determination. From the word go it was evident that both crews would do all they could to make it to the next round, highlighted by their bow ball to bow ball start. By the ÂĽ mile post, still neck and neck, the opposing styles of these crews became apparent. Whilst the Tideway Scullers remained composed and long, the courageous and more aggressive rowing by Wimbledon began to cost them as their opposition moved away. With lactic acid building, the timing of the Wimbledon crew began to fade and although they maintained their gutsy battle until the end, it was the tideway scullers who came out on top.

Shrewsbury School vs Godolphin and Latymer School

The penultimate Prince Philip event of the day, and perhaps the most interesting one so far. The two school crews, both who have had varying success over the past few years, lined up to take each other on. What followed was a perfectly matched race, with clear water only appearing at the very last moment. For the middle section of the race, the lead changed hands seemingly every few moments, with both crews fight it out at the same rate, Godolphin went for a push just after Fawley that saw them squeeze out in front but only seconds later it was snatched back by Shrewsbury. Ultimately it was the girls from Shrewsbury that had enough in their legs to carry them over the line as the winners.

Latymer Upper School vs Melbourne Girls School

Melbourne come into this race seeded, and having not raced at all. Meanwhile, Latymer had an uncomfortable boat length lead in their heat over St Georges College. Latymer will be fatigued, but will come into this race fighting with a high rate start. Melbourne’s first place at the Australian Rowing Championships will give them confidence that they have the speed to win, and Latymer will need to find something special if they want to walk away with the win.

ASRA vs Surbiton High School
