Henley Royal Regatta 2024 – Fatsculler’s Wednesday Preview

Morning Session (8:30am to 12:20pm)

Race 6, 9:00am – Cambridge University & Roskilde RK, Denmark v Riverside Boat Club, Visitors’ Challenge Cup

It will be interesting to see senior Danish international Bastian Secher lead the Light Blue boat against a crew with some senior US lightweight internationals.

Race 8, 09:10am – Durham University v Princeton University ‘B’, USA, Temple Challenge Cup

The Temple is at its best when it is GB vs USA. This could be a firecracker.

Race 11, 09:30am – Saugatuck Rowing Club, USA v Shiplake College, Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup

Both crews looked really strong on day one – this could be a classic, especially if Shiplake are firing on all cylinders.

Race 16, 10:00am – The Ivy Club, USA v Leander Club, Remenham Challenge Cup

A strong GB contingent racing for the Americans against the home favourite in the open women’s eights – this could be one of the highlights of the morning.

Race 25, 10:50am – London Rowing Club v Molesey Boat Club, Thames Challenge Cup

Two Remenham clubs going head-to-head in eights is always going to be a crowd favourite.

Race 28, 11:10am – Star & Arrow v AKR Wurzburg & RG Speyer, Germany, Prince of Wales Challenge Cup

Star & Arrow with Olympic gold and silver medallists on-board against the probable German lightweight quad for the world championships; what’s not to like?

Afternoon Session (2pm – 4:20pm)

Race 48, 2:40pm – Shanghai New Rowing, China v Hamburger und Germania, Germany, Thames Challenge Cup

China v Germany in club eights – only at Henley. This should be a fascinating race to watch.

Race 63, 4:10pm – GSR Aegir, Netherlands v Drexel Uni USA, Island Challenge Cup

Another fascinating match-up in the Island between two increasingly regular representatives on the Henley waters.

Race 64, 4:15pm – Hamilton Boys, New Zealand v St Edwards School, Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup

This could well be the race of the day. The Maadi Cup-winning crew up against the defending champions who looked very, very good dispatching Pangbourne on day one.

Evening Session (5:30pm – 7:30pm)

Race 78, 6:40 – Thames RC v Uni of California, Berkeley ‘A’, Visitors’ Challenge Cup

Cal are a lot of people’s favourites for the event but they will face a tough battle against a Thames crew with a lot of Henley experience, and medals, onboard.
