Henley Royal Regatta – Day 3 Review and Saturday Preview – Diamond Jubilee

REVIEWS:

Henley Rowing Club ‘B’ vs Marlow Rowing Club

Marlow are strong contenders in the Diamond Jubilee after reaching the final at Henley Women’s Regatta. In their first race of the regatta they established a strong lead over Henley ‘B’ and continued to pick up inches down the course. Henley Rowing Club managed to qualify three crews in the Jubilee and each have shown their strength respectively over the past few days. After spending most of their year in the coxless four, Henley ‘B’ earned themselves a commendable result considering their recent switch to sculling.

Latymer Upper School ‘B’ vs Gloucester Rowing Club

It seems Gloucester have had extremely bad luck this season. Their crab at National Schools’ cost them a medal and, at Henley Royal, what seemed at first like a little flirtation with the booms suddenly escalated into something far more intimate. Gloucester then struggled to close the water which separated them and Latymer ‘B’, allowing Latymer to steal the lead and take the win by just over three lengths. A very impressive result from this second quad and it seems they keep picking up speed as the regatta goes on. Emotions will be running high in the Gloucester tent as both crews from the Fawley and the Diamond Jubilee have been eliminated.

Lady Eleanor Holles vs Henley Rowing Club ‘A’

LEH gave Henley a run for their money this morning. Winning with a narrow margin unexpected by many may be the push Henley need to up their game if they want to win this weekend. After their win at National Schools’, Henley had a disappointing result at Henley Women’s where they were knocked out by Tideway Scullers, a crew they may well go on to face in the final.

Headington School vs Surbiton High School

A closer race than perhaps was expected. Headington were incredibly quick off the start but Surbiton managed to stick with them in a race to Fawley. Headington will go on to race Tideway Scullers tomorrow morning, a race which should logistically be quite well matched although it seems at the moment Scullers have the upper hand. Headington produced the fastest time in their race against Gloucester at Henley Women’s so it will be interesting to see if they are able to replicate this time and finish ahead of the Scullers who won there.

NCRA vs Tideway Scullers’ School

Tideway Scullers are very much the favourites to win this regatta after their recent success at Henley Women’s. NCRA put up a convincing fight in the first half but were unable to match Scullers’s power through the second half of the race. NCRA will be on a well deserved trip to Spoons this evening and no doubt will be back again next year ready to make it further into the regatta.

Shrewsbury School vs Henley Rowing Club ‘C’

Shrewsbury stormed down the course ahead of Henley ‘C’ this morning, accomplishing clear water by the barrier. Shrewsbury go on to race Lea Rowing Club tomorrow after their routine win against the Henley J16 crew. Given the two race day they may have tomorrow the plan seems to be to stick with what they know and keep recovery techniques unchanged. As we know from seeing the rigidity of their boy’s eight recovery, it looks like the cool-box with Yazoos will continue to come out for the rest of the regatta.

Lea Rowing Club vs Frankfurter Rudergesellschaft Germania

As expected, the German crew were unable to hold off their British rivals and lost by just under two lengths. Lea’s technical advantage took them over the line and will no doubt aid them as they progress through the regatta. Frankfurter will be packing their bags early and heading home after being knocked out on the second day of Diamond Jubilee racing.

PREVIEWS:

Latymer Upper School ‘A’ vs Marlow Rowing Club

This race should be a fairly matched battle between the girls from Latymer and Marlow. Both squads are traditionally strong in coxless quads and never fail to churn out success in the boat class at the Henley regattas. Marlow will be looking to repeat their success of last year where they made the final and were beaten by Y Quad Cities, with the USA crew well out of the picture, this could be Marlow’s time to shine. Latymer were also given grief by the Y Quad crew and were knocked out in the semi by under a length. With both crews producing fast times so far this will be a gut wrenching race to watch.

Latymer Upper School ‘B’ vs Henley Rowing Club ‘A’

Latymer have done incredibly well to make it this far into the regatta as a ‘B’ crew. After knocking out the German crew and Gloucester I’m sure they have well exceeded many expectations. Henley were knocked out in the semi-final of Henley Women’s Regatta but won gold at National Schools’ Regatta, with such impressive results backing them I’m sure they will be progressing to the semi final of this event. That being said, it’s always nice to see an underdog take the win.

Headington School vs The Tideway Scullers School

The Tideway Scullers have outdone themselves so far this week, winning their race against NCRA today comfortably. They will certainly have gained confidence from their win at Henley Women’s and will be looking to replicate this result this weekend. Headington had a tougher race than expected today against Surbiton, and will have their work cut out tomorrow.

Shrewsbury School vs Lea Rowing Club

This race looks as it will be quite a close battle. Shrewsbury took the win easily against Henley Rowing Club ‘C’ and look set to repeat their strong performance from National Schools’ Regatta where they placed third in the A final. Lea also raced in the A final at National Schools’ Regatta where they placed sixth. Shrewsbury appears to be the stronger crew here, completing the course in a faster time than Lea in what was both of these crews first run down the course having both prequalified and neither having to race until the Friday.
