Henley Royal Regatta 2022 – Saturday Briefing, Diamond Jubilee Challenge Cup

Saturday Review

Redwood Vs. Wycliffe

Coming off the island, Wycliffe and Redwood held a tight margin and it was anyones guess as to who would dominate the rest of the race. Between Fawley and the Barrier the race began to unfold Redwood beginning to extend their lead and control the race with their confident rhythm. Despite being well drilled the UK sculling talents of Wycliffe could not match the speed of USA National champions Redwood who inevitably led across the finish line. It will be interesting to see how they fair up against their opposition tomorrow in a battle of USA vs UK in what arguably was a race that tested them from start to finish.

Shiplake Vs. Claires Court

With the day of racing coming to a close, all eyes were on the final race of Claires Court and Shiplake. Meeting again after a fight at National Schools’ sure meant for a tense atmosphere on the start line. Race favourites Shiplake provided a lead from the end of Temple Island. This lead was not held for long as the crews began to battle it out down the course and Claire’s Court started to regain lost water. Coming into the enclosures there was little to distinguish between the lines of bow ball as both crews battled to try gain water. across the finish line the race just witnessed was unable to predict with the heartbreakers from Claire’s Court eventually coming out on top.

Sunday Preview

Going into tomorrow’s final it will be a showdown between the USA and UK in what is set to be a tough race. With Claire’s Court tight race today they will be approaching tomorrow with arguably the more fatigued legs than their opposition. With the reputation of the Redwood crew and the appeared easier of the two semi finals it is likely that they will be walking away with Red Boxes at the end of the Regatta.
