Junior 16 4x-
Maidenhead vs Henley RC ‘A’:
The first race in this category, and the first side by side race of the day and it was a good one. The two crews were neck and neck coming off the island and continued this struggle for the top spot as they came past the enclosures. Maidenhead came through to take the win but only just.
Globe RC vs Sir William Perkin’s Sch:
These J16s were setting up the day to be a good one, with this second race in the quads also very tight. Globe was inching ahead by the barrier marker, and they had pulled away enough to move into the middle of the course by the halfway point, although this was a risky move as they were barely a length up on their competitor. This tactic served them well however, and they crossed the line first.
Wycliffe Junior RC vs Kingston:
There was a bit of steering trouble for this Kingston crew, and it meant that Wycliffe had a strong lead straight away. They continued rowing well but unfortunately, they could not make up the distance and Wycliffe took the win.
Sir William Borlase vs Henley RC ‘B’:
There was nothing in it between these two crews as they came up to the quarter mile marker and although they got very close together in the middle of the course, they quickly moved apart again. Henley managed to just have the slight edge into the barrier and once they had this slight advantage, they continued to move away. Borlase stayed in touch and didn’t let the Henley crew run away from them. It wasn’t enough however, and Henley won this round.
Junior 16 4+
Henley RC vs Wallingford RC:
It was neck and neck as the two crews came past the island and it wasn’t until the quarter mile marker that Henley started pushing ahead. Wallingford did not let them get away however and managed to stay in touch. By the barrier Henley had put in a convincing push and moved their lead out to a length which they maintained across the line.
Aberdeen Schools RA vs Headington Sch BC:
Both crews stormed away from the island with neither having a clear lead, Headington might have had one seat by the enclosures, but Aberdeen were fighting back hard. The two boats were very well matched, and this proved to be a tight race all the way up the course but by the line Headington had half a length and crossed the line first.
St Paul’s Girls’ Sch vs Wimbledon High School
St Pauls pulled away from their competitors by the end of the island and maintained this lead as they came to the barrier. Wimbledon put in a good push and it was almost enough, but St Paul’s responded and moved away from them to open it up to clear water. Wimbledon put up a good fight but ultimately it was not enough and St Paul’s won this round.
Glasgow academy/ George Watsons college vs Surbiton High Sch
Another Scottish crew that made it through qualifying, and it was clear why as they stormed down the course ahead of their opposition as they rowed through the barrier. Surbiton was not letting them get away however, and put in another push but despite this it was the crew from Scotland that came through triumphant.
