Henley Women’s Regatta 2023 Preview – The Haslam Trophy for Championship Lightweight Doubles

The Haslam Trophy is the championship lightweight double sculls category for Henley Women’s Regatta. To be eligible for the lightweight double, both crew members must be below 59kgs and have an average for 57kgs or below. For this 2023 year, we have eight crews entered in total, with two coming from the USA to race.

Durham University

From Durham University we have Izzy Sellers and Caroline Rijkse. Izzy and Caroline came first place at BUCS Regatta 2023 in the Championship Lightweight Double, a full ten seconds in front of their competition. At the Metropolitan Amateur Regatta just last weekend, these two came in fourth on the Sunday in the Championship Double Scull.

Reading University

Reading University have entered Alex Grocock and Lara Brittain for this double, who also competed at BUCs in the Championship Lightweight Double coming in third place.

Princeton Lightweight Women, USA

Coming over from the USA we have racing for Princeton Lightweight Women, Kasey Shashaty and Amelia Boehle. These two in this double have gone unbeaten in their 2022 season; this includes IRA Varsity double gold and Eastern sprints varsity double gold.

Nottingham University

The Nottingham University double consists of Tess O’Donnell and Sinaed Kirk. They raced the Lightweight quad at BUCs regatta and came in a strong third place alongside Kirsty Dalzell and Niamh Cunningham. At the Met Regatta Tess and Sinaed came 5th in the B final.

Also racing we have the University of Wisconsin (USA) Evelyn Payne and Alicia Le Bars. A Surrey University double of Amy Hill and Lois Catling-Hall. Upper Thames Rowing Club have entered Naomi Ashcroft and Rebecca Sadler, finally a Nottingham Rowing Club double will be racing too, O Dunnett and H Shapton.

Prediction

Overall, I predict the Princeton Lightweight Women to win, however in a tough final against Durham University. However many of these crews will be competitive and make for some good hard racing for such a prestigious title on the Henley stretch in good prep for Henley Royal Regatta the following week. Good luck ladies!
