This year there are 46 crews competing for the Rosie Mayglothling Trophy they will face a time trial on Friday morning which will cut the field down to 16. These top 16 crews progress from the time trial to side-by-side racing which will take place over Friday and Sunday. There are some international crews choosing to race this category but there is very strong “home-grown” competition this year too which will make this event even more exciting to race and watch.
GSR Aegir (NED)
Racing for GSR Aegir (NLD) we have Umi Kuiphuis and Wietske Anema. Who came a strong second place in the A final of the lightweight double category at Royal Holland-Beker 2024. Only just the weekend past, these ladies raced together again, this time securing gold in the championship lightweight double at ARB Forestbaan through racing heats, semi-finals and then the A final.
DSR Proteus-Eretes/HSRV Pelargos
Another Dutch crew which raced but took first place in the lightweight double category at the Royal Holland-Beker and is racing at Henley Women’s is DSR Proteus-Eretes/HSRV Pelargos, a composite crew with Laura Kempen and Leonoor Bos. Also at ARB Forestbaan, we saw a similar composite with Laura Kemper, but this time with Leonor Forest. At this event they won the lightweight development double category.
Toowong (AUS)
Coming in all the way from Toowong (AUS), we have Gabby Geldard and Jemima Powell. Jemima recently came fourth in the championship U23 lightweight double category at Australian Rowing championship 2024. Gabby also raced but in the club double category for this event and came a strong fifth in the final. Although they didn’t race together this highlights their speed but also depth of squad at Toowong RC.
Hartpury Univ & Coll
Hartpury Univ & Coll we have Ellie Dash alongside Millie Hurrel. Ellie Dash raced at BUCs regatta 2024 in a double with Chloe Shepherd which won the intermediate A final and went on to win the Championship A final at the Met regatta. Chloe raced with Millie at National Schools regatta where they not only raced but set a new course record. To further this Millie raced in a double with a different crew mate to race at the European Rowing Championships.
De Montfort University
From De Montfort University we have Hannah Milnes and Lizzie Webster who previously raced at the Met regatta coming fifth in the A final of the double sculls category on Sunday and also managed to secure a spot in the C final of the BUCs regatta back in May. These two have raced this season together recently also competing at the Reading Amateur regatta where they made it through semi-finals to the Final.
Notable Mentions
McGee and Dashley are racing again for Norwich RC after placing sixth in the A final at the Met regatta. We are also seeing Globe RC’s O’Brien and Haines who raced at the Reading Amateur regatta just this weekend gone. Other Dutch crews look to be strong this year are the representatives from AASR Skøll (NED), Mabel Foster and Maartje Glasz. Coming in all the way from Jacksonville University (USA), we have Mackenzie Turinsky and Emilee Podiva who are joined by a double from the University of Rhode Island’s Abby Galayda and Emma Brookins. These international entries show just how competitive this category could be, and as is often said, they won’t have come all this way for nothing. Expect some gutsy racing from these crews.
Predictions
I think we will see the GSR Aegir and DSR Proteus-Eretes/HSRV Pelargos crews battle it to semi-finals. We will also see strong performances from Toowong RC and Hartpury Univ & Coll making it to semi-finals. It will be interesting to watch Norwich RC along with De Montfort University for their long time rowing together and successes so far over this season.
