Henley Women’s Regatta never fails to give us some first-class races, it showcases some of the best examples of the strength and depth of women’s rowing and always throws interesting and exciting races our way. This is a collection of some of the best from the past few years, the most surprising and the closest races that help make HWR a fantastic weekend.
2017 – J8+ Final: Headington School A vs. St Paul’s School USA
A very tight race up until about 500m to go and even then Headington only won by half a length. An excellent example of how to keep cool and determined when neck and neck the whole way and also shows the prowess of Headington, a school which had a three year winning streak and were not about to lose it.
2017 – J4X Semi-Final: Isle of Ely vs. Henley
Despite Isle of Ely’s success in the season, Henley’s prestige made it hard to see the race not going in their favour, so for some the result would have perhaps come as a surprise. It was a fantastic race with a very close finish.
2018 – J4+ Final: Henley vs Putney High School A
With only 1 second between their wins in the semis, it was a hotly contested and talked about final, which did not disappoint. Putney finished off their season with a win, solidifying them as an excellent club that was certainly making their mark on the rowing world.
2018 – J4X Final: Henley vs Latymer Upper School
Another brilliant coxless quad final, with only 3/4 of a length in it. The final push in the last 500 showed the determination from both crews, closing the gap and but ultimately Henley managed to hold onto their lead.
2019 – J4X Semi-Final: Marlow vs Headington School
Again, the coxless quads delivered this year with some tight and exciting races, this semi final was one of such races. The last minute surge from Headington to try and take the win created a very tense final 500, although they lost out by 1/3 of a length to Marlow it was still a brilliant effort.
2019 – J4X- Semi-Final Tideway Scullers vs Henley
Henley went into this competition in 2019 as the ones to beat, however, Tideway scullers came through to win by a small margin and it was one of the surprise results of the weekend. Tideway then went on to win the final by a strong two lengths.
2019 – J4+ Semi-Final: St Paul’s Girl’s School vs Glasgow Academy
This was a race of composite crews, and they were neck and neck all the way down the course. It was the first of two incredibly close semi finals for this category and Glasgow snagged the win, a result that may have been a surprise to some, adding to the drama of the competition.
2019 – J4+ Semi-Final Henley vs Kingston
This was the second semi final of this category and just as competitive as the first one, Henley were unable to pull away from Kingston and they really had a battle on their hands to keep their half a length lead.
