HRR 2021 Briefing – Friday, Fawley Challenge Cup

Exeter Rowing Club vs Lea Rowing Club

And we’re off, first race of day 3 for the Fawley Challenge Cup. Exeter take a dominant lead of a boat length towards the barrier. As the drone flies overhead, Lea are raising their rate and power and are gradually catching the very technical Exeter. Lea eventually lead Exeter by half a boat length and win by almost a boat length. Superb race from the Lea.

Wallingford Rowing Club vs Tideway Scullers School “A”

Both crews off to a flying start, looking really sharp. As most people expected Tideway are off to blistering start and looking very stable past the barrier and Fawley. As Wallingford kept in touch past temple island, nothing is beating this Tideway crew at the moment.

Windsor Boys School “A” vs Henley Rowing Club

Both crew get off very clean and Henley take the lead past Temple island. As Windsor lengthen out they slowly take the lead from Henley and pull out to an easy lead. Windsor again slowly capitalise on their lead in a very technical way. Although Henley is looking very sharp, Windsor progresses into Saturday easily.

Leander Club vs Windsor Boys School “B”

Again both crews have go off on a flying start, with leander taking an early lead. Leander may be looking a bit more tense than Windsor but they slowly start to pull away from Windsor. Very impressive from Windsor for keeping on fighting against the boys in pink. But the power from the Leander crew wasnt enough to hold onto.

To Thursday

Leander vs Windsor Boys School

Arguably the final a day early. Both crews will understand that the winner of this semi-final will probably lift the trophy on Sunday. A real Saturday blockbuster and one that promises to unfold what we thought we knew about schoolboy sculling narratives. Can WSBC overturn the result from the National Schools’ Regatta or will Leander take another step towards retaining their title?

Lea Rowing Club vs The Tideway Scullers School ‘A’

If you had asked either crew who they would rather have faced of the remaining three, they would probably have named each other. This is a unique opportunity for one of these two boats – both of whom have been knocking on the podium door all season – to reach a Fawley Challenge Cup final. Then it all comes down to one day, one race, between the Henley booms. Let’s get it.
