Saturday Racing:
Surbiton High School v LEH
Predicted to be one of the great races of the day, this match-up didn’t disappoint. Both crews were neck-and-neck coming away from the island with both boats going out hard from the start, despite some slight steering issues from the Surbiton cox. They quickly amended this and gradually began to pull away from LEH. LEH had a tough race yesterday against Shrewsbury and it began to show in this battle as Surbiton began to move and take control of the course. Both boats were at similar rates throughout the contest, but it was the Surbiton crew that looked the better and tighter crew; they managed to translate their technical prowess into verifiable boat speed, winning by just over a length.
Henley R.C v Headington
This was the race that was pipped to be the de facto final of this event, yet unfortunately it didn’t deliver. Headington established an early lead and safely maintained it, so much so that they felt comfortable to take their rate down to 26 as they came across the finish. Henley did all they could and put down a good sprint in the closing stages to close the gap between the two crews, they managed to make up a length or so but ultimately it wasn’t enough to row through the dominant Headington.
Sunday Preview:
Surbiton High School v Headington
This has the potential to be a very good race, if Surbiton can demonstrate the maturity and skill they have shown throughout this regatta again. There is no doubt they are a very talented group of rowers and have bright futures ahead of them but when it comes down to it, I think Headington will snatch the title. They have looked dominant over the course of not only this season, but also this competition. It will take a lot from the Surbiton crew to overthrow this impressive Headington boat tomorrow, and I don’t think they will manage it.
