HWR Saturday Briefing – Student Events

This is your Saturday briefing covering all the action in the student events at Henley Women’s Regatta. Here you’ll find a brief look at today’s racing, as well as predictions for tomorrow’s action.

Academic Eights:

A strong showing across the board, no crew had an easy ride through the heats this morning – nor the quarter-finals this afternoon, in fact. Pushed hard by LMH through their heat, it was Bath University that posted the quickest time of the morning, yet they were unable to defeat the might of UL’s ‘A’ crew in the QFs. In the all-Durham quarter final, it was the ‘A’ crew that came out on top, whilst it was Newcastle that were the fasted crew of the afternoon, pushed down the course by UL’s ‘B’ crew. Tomorrow morning the two semi-finals will pit UL against Durham, and Brookes against Newcastle. Our bet? We’ll be seeing a UL-Newcastle final before the day is out (with a likely UL victory).

Academic Fours:

The only formally seeded crew in this event – Imperial – will battle against Brookes in the second semi-final tomorrow, after the Oxford-based crew stretched out ahead of Sheffield in their QF. That race will follow the first academic fours semi-final at 11:50, in which Cambridge will face UL. It was UL who posted the margianlly quicker times earlier today, but we’ve seen over and over again this season the strength of the CUBC crews, so all is to play for. If I were a betting man, I’d be expecting a Brookes-Cambridge final, with an all-London affair seeming less likely.
