And so, rolling on quickly after Wallingford Regatta comes the first of the major summer regattas. Also like Wallingford it’s a small pool of entries, with only eight crews. The crews will certainly be used to the course at Dorney by now – favourable for both this weekend’s races and their future in senior squads.
Defying the predictions of this category at Wallingford, Surbiton was pipped for first place by just over a second. Despite their comparatively slower start than the four crews that followed, it was St Paul’s Girls that took the win. The top two crews had a fairly significant lead on the third and fourth placing crews, Latymer Upper and Putney High, who will also race this weekend.
Conspicuously absent from this event at Wallingford were Henley RC, whose absence undoubtedly affected the positions on the podium. With this in mind, I wouldn’t be surprised if they gave Surbiton and St Paul’s a run for their money.
Also racing are Royal Shrewsbury Sch, Aberdeen Sch Rowing Association, and King’s Sch Chester.
Predictions
I reckon St Paul’s will likely take the win again, but there’s a good chance Henley will take a spot on the podium from Surbiton or Latymer Upper – most likely the latter. Nonetheless, we’re all keen to see how the chips will fall at NSR this year.
