It’s a busy bank holiday weekend for Dorney Lake with the Junior Sculling Regatta following on from Wallingford on Sunday. For those juniors competing at both events it’s a great way to get plenty of side by side racing early on in the regatta season. After a 1900m time trial the fastest 6 scullers will progress to a final with the rest eliminated.
The Windsor Boys School – Ingham
Charlie Ingham is part of the Windsor 2nd boat. Given the speed we’ve seen so far this season from that boat we can probably expect a similar level of performance. Windsor Boys has history in the single scull having won 2 of the past three Championship Single events at NSR so any sculler from the club should be taken seriously.
Exeter Rowing Club – Fuller
Tom Fuller is the brother of last year’s NSR Championship Single winner Ed. Perhaps some shared genetics will mean he can follow in his brother’s single sculling success.
The Windsor Boys School – Chute
The clear favourite to win on Monday, Marcus Chute is the number one ranked junior sculler in the country. A member of the schools impressive first quad he’s got a number of achievements in the single under his belt from winning Scullers Head way back in September to coming out on top at GB junior trials.
Claires Court School – Pianta
Claires Court have the biggest entry into this event with the four members of their first quad racing. Pianta is the highest ranked and has the best shot at medalling. The quad had a good performance at Schools Head placing 6th so we’ll see how they compare in smaller boats.
Predictions
Chute is a near certainty to win with Ingham a likely runner up and Pianta taking bronze. Any one of the other Claires Court scullers could come in those second and third spots. The only other factor to consider is that all the athletes mentioned above are entered to race at Wallingford on Sunday. This could provide an opening for someone from another club with fresher legs to take advantage of.
