This Monday is the return of the Junior Sculling Regatta which is an excellent opportunity to see the calibre of British Sculling programmes and athletes. The Junior women’s single will be an exciting chance to see nine athletes from seven clubs going head to head as they line up on the start line of what looks to be a tight event.
The distinguishing front runners in this event look to be Laoise O’Donohue from Henley Rowing Club and Hannah Hickson and Anya Macfarlane both from Claires Court School. O’Donohue proved to excel in the single placing second last year at GB junior trials and has dominated this year racing in this boat class making her the stiffest of competition to come up against. Both Hickson and Macfarlane look to be vying for podium positions also. After placing second together in the Championship Double these two arguably have the sculling skills to be pushing the calibre of this event further coming into this bank holiday weekend.
Furthermore, the Kings School Worcester single of Alice Baker also remains one to keep an eye on. Baker has proven her speed in rowing to gain her a place at Stanford University next year and add to build up the strength and competition in this single scull event. With two singles entered from Maidenhead Rowing club keeping an eye on these athletes would be a smart decision after what looked to be a successful Easter rowing camp.
With 3 further singles entered from Rob Roy Boat Club, Hartpury College and Walbrook Rowing Club– all of which are clubs with strong reputations this will be an eagerly anticipated result. The formidable force of Laoise O’Donohue of Henley Rowing Club places her as the arguable favourite but it will be exciting to see how the podium turns out at the end of Monday’s racing.
