Karāpiro Christmas Regatta 2024 – Boys U18 Coxed Fours Preview

Due to supplementary entries still being open, JRN does not have the official draw for Christmas Regatta 2024; however, here are some crews which, based on past performances and current information, we expect to enter and perform well in this event.

As one of the most anticipated events of this regatta, several keen eyes will no doubt be looking to close the margins from the previous KRI Club Regatta only a few weeks ago. Several crews stood out at this event, predominantly North Shore Rowing Club, Auckland Rowing Club and Kings College Rowing Club, so it will be interesting to see which crews have made gains, and which are being hunted.

North Shore Rowing Club

Taking out the final in a dominant one-length lead at the previous regatta, this strong North Shore crew will be looking to take home another win this weekend. Younger than the rest of the field, their ‘A’ crew will certainly be sending a strong message to their competitors with wins in such an impressive display. Not only that, but rounding out the top three last time was the North Shore ‘B’ crew, primarily composed of their U18 rowers, showing remarkable depth to tick off multiple steps of the podium. Although they finished with an 8-second margin behind their younger peers, this crew is also certainly in a strong position to step up and compete for the win.

Auckland Rowing Club

An experienced crew which has rowed together for a few seasons now, this Auckland Rowing Club four will be looking to challenge for the win against their opponents from North Shore. Just four seconds off the pace in the final, this crew holds huge potential, with half the crew taking home a silver medal in the boys U17 pair at the Aon Maadi Regatta earlier in the year. Although not a small margin behind, anything looks likely to change at this point in the season.

King’s College Rowing Club

With two of the King’s crews placing fourth and fifth at KRI Club Regatta, there is potential for King’s to step onto the podium this regatta. Not far off third place with a three-second margin, the younger of the King’s crews will be looking to beat their older peers once again, and see if they can challenge for a top three-placing. With only a 0.8-second margin between the two King’s crews, this weekend looks to be an exciting prospect for more competitive racing between the squads. And with such a close margin currently, could one crew gain more speed with some refined crew selection later this season?

Predictions

It’s hard to look beyond the younger North Shore crew, with such a dominant performance at the last regatta. Similarly, the two King’s crews are not far off, and with two crews in the A-final last regatta, they could look to step onto the podium. Similarly, the impressive Auckland Rowing Club four will no doubt be looking to prove a point this weekend. I predict North Shore to take first place, followed by Sacred Heart, and possibly either King’s or North Shore.
