Marlow Long Distance Sculls is 4700m upstream, so I am excited to see how the scullers do in this event with GB Early ID Trials fast approaching. Despite only containing four WJ18 scullers, it is still a very competitive field.
Sir William Borlase – Bruce
Bruce is normally recognized for her accomplishments in the junior women’s pair. She finished 6th at the Pairs Head this year in WJ18 pairs and, in the same crew, won gold at the 2014 National Schools’ Regatta. Bruce also competed in the eight which won sliver this year at the same regatta. Though a notably strong athlete, her skills as a sculler have not yet been seen and it will definitely be interesting to see if she is able to convert her sweep strength into a single.
Marlow- Devereux
Devereux is a well-established sculler, having come 7th at the GB trials last season. I believe she will most likely take the win this weekend, as she’s almost definitely the strongest athlete in the field. With the race taking place on home turf, she should know the ins and outs of this course which could be a crucial factor. As far as I can find, Marlow have not competed this season yet so this race may show us a glimpse of their deck of cards.
Shiplake – Walker & McNerney
Walker has already shown this season that she is a competitive sculler and can take on a head-race well; in the scull, she achieved third at Reading Small Boats head and 10th in j18 double at the Pairs Head. McNerney has also competed this year in numerous sculling events so, with the experience in sculling and this season combined, the Shiplake crews could put up a fight.
My prediction is: Marlow to take the win, Borlase to take second followed by Shiplake Walker then McNerney.
