The final run out for racing crews before they take to the iconic Henley booms, Marlow Regatta always produces fast and exciting racing as programmes all over the country begin to finalise Henley Royal Regatta formations. This years Championship Single will be no exception, with top athletes coming from all over the country.
Twickenham RC
Fresh off his incredible fourth place finish at World Cup I in Belgrade, Serbia, a few weeks ago, Callum Dixon will be looking to continue his impressive run of results this season by taking the win in this event this weekend after winning this same category at Wallingford Regatta earlier in the year.
Callum has been on incredible form this year, at just 21 years old he’s still eligible for Under 23 trials, however attended the senior men’s training camp in Aviz earlier in the year and was in the B final of the men’s single at final trials. He then proceeded to finish just 1.5 seconds behind trials winner and Tokyo Olympian Graeme Thomas in Belgrade.
Callum is clearly an athlete with incredible talent and it’ll be fascinating to see how his season develops with opportunities at both senior and Under 23 level available to him.
The Windsor Boys’ School BC
Another athlete on impressive form this year is Marcus Chute, he’s won all of the junior GB trials this season and recently won the gold medal in the Championship Single event at the National Schools’ Regatta. This was after he came back from Varese, Italy, where he won a gold medal at the Junior European Rowing Championships recording a sub-seven-minute time. Marcus has also been part of an impressive Windsor Boys’ junior quad this season, taking the win at both Fours Head and Schools’ Head and will undoubtedly come back into this quad after this regatta in preparation for the Fawley Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta.
Leander Club
Known for having an incredibly strong men’s sculling programme year after year, Leander have four scullers entered in this event this weekend. Mathew Fielding, Dmytro Mikhai, Matt Brigham and Alex King. Brigham was the sculler who beat the reigning Olympic Champion Mahe Drysdale at Henley Royal Regatta back in 2019 and Alex King was also part of the Twickenham RC quad who reached the final of the Prince of Wales Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta last year. The calibre of these scullers cannot be underestimated and I would expect to se them all battling at the sharp end of this field at Marlow Regatta this weekend.
Prediction
I can’t see anyone other than Callum Dixon taking the win in this event, he beat Marcus Chute at the start of the season at Wallingford Regatta and I think he’s found a lot of speed since then. Marcus Chute will take a close second followed by Leander’s Mathew Fielding in third.
