Twenty one crews will be contesting Tier 2 Coxless Fours. However, they will be participating in the same time trial as Championship Fours which will create some very competitive and nail biting finals.
Northwich RC
It’s always exciting to see the Lawton brothers out in any combination. This year they return to Tier 2 Coxless Fours with two new club mates, having won this event last year edging out Newcastle University in an epic final. This time round, they’ve brought two sets of fresh legs on board and they’ll be looking to defend their title from last year.
Nottingham RC
Throughout this season, Nottingham have found some speed in the coxless four at numerous regattas. Notably, sixth place in Challenge Fours and a win in Club Fours at Wallingford Regatta should stand them in good stead.
Radley College BC
Always worth keeping an eye on some pesky schoolboys. Radley’s priority will obviously be the PE so expect this to be some from their second or third eight. Both of these eights won their respective categories at National Schools’ in times that would scare some of the championship crews. Last year, Radley had a crew in the Visitors so perhaps this is a quartet that will be trying to replicate that.
Star Club
Always great to see an entry from the Bedford boys. Whilst not necessarily performing at their historic best, they are under new leadership which is always exciting to see. Back in 2012, Star won the Britannia Challenge Cup. This crew is likely not at that level, however, it will be fantastic for the club if they can show some speed this weekend and get themselves into the Royal draw this year.
City of Bristol RC
As I write this I’m unsure if Bristol will be prioritising the Wyfolds or the Thames this year. With a bumper Royal entry expected, Bristol are up against it if they are to get through to the Friday again like they did last year. However, after a seventh place finish at Met in the D Final, let’s hope they’ve found some more speed to get them to the Tuesday.
Curlew RC & Tideway Scullers School
A couple of lengths separated these crews in the C Final at Met, with Curlew getting the better in the Championship field. Scullers have a long and proud history of producing some very quick fours over the years so there’s a lot to live up to, particularly as they were beaten by Curlew…
Prediction
Worth noting as well that club rowing is absolutely superb. There are always fantastic crews all the way through the draw in all three club events at Henley Royal. Marlow Regatta plays such an important part in the season for everyone regardless of crew or ability. it can generate some last minute confidence or provide a much needed kick up the arse.
My Prediction… Northwich to repeat.
