This year, the number of boats entered in the Women’s Championship Coxed Fours at Metropolitan Regatta is significantly smaller than previous years, with no medal being awarded as there are fewer than four entries. However, with the decreased number of entrants, there is also raised levels of excitement, as crews have an increased chance of seizing the title of fastest down the course in this division.
Durham University BC
On Saturday, Durham University’s entry, stroked by Mavra will race alone in the division, likely competing for time. Mavra’s boat was previously entered in the Women’s Intermediate Four at BUCS Regatta earlier this year, where they placed fourth in the A final, being pipped by Edinburgh University Boat Club as they approached the finish. It will be interesting to see if the weeks between BUCS and Metropolitan have allowed Mavra’s Durham crew to gain some extra speed on the water. Moreover, it’s likely that there will be some inter-club rivalry with a second Durham crew racing on the Sunday. Although little information about Thomson’s crew is to be found, it’s likely that they will produce a similar time to that of the Saturday crew.
Agecroft RC
Also racing on Sunday is Agecroft’s crew stroked by Grainger. Agecroft’s legacy of success at Metropolitan Regatta is evident, having placed fourth in the A final and second in the B final in the same division last year. With this in mind, I suspect that they will be looking to improve on their results this year, seeking first place.
Prediction
Overall, I think it’s very likely that on Sunday we will see Agecroft come out on top with the Durham crew placing second. However, I think the unofficial competition and point of interest in this division will be in comparing the two times for each Durham crew. Either way, this promises to be an exciting race.
