For The Metropolitan Regatta of 2022, we see a total of nineteen women’s championship quads racing on Saturday, sixteen racing on Sunday, and nine of these are racing both days: Marlow RC, Tideway Scullers, Newcastle University, Durham ARC, Thames RC, London RC, Cardiff University, Exeter University, and City of Cambridge RC. With it being the championship category, we are guaranteed to see strong and tight racing for both days. All crews entered are highly competitive meaning, it’ll be tough to land a place in the A final, however every crew will be well prepared and ready for action when the light turns green.
Saturday
Last year at Henley Women’s Regatta, we saw Tideway Scullers School take the win in Aspirational Quads. Also in the mix were London RC beating a Newcastle University and Tyne RC composite to get a place in the semi-finals and Newcastle University making it to the quarter finals.
Met Regatta last year saw Leander winning the event with Marlow RC in second and seventh place. In the B final, crews such as Tideway Scullers and London saw strong races on the Saturday with Scullers snagging a spot in the A final for Sunday.
Although we didn’t see them racing a quad last year, Saturday sees Reading University racing. Reading contains some high profile athletes and if this crew is made up of the cream of the crop then it will be flying down the course.
Sunday
Looking back to Henley Women’s Regatta 2021 in the Aspirational Quads, Upper Thames RC sped through to the final against scullers, we also see Nottingham University in the semi-finals, with all crews putting in competitive entries. However, with a university’s high turn over of athletes, will this be the same crew as before?
As mentioned before 2021’s Met Regatta saw Leander win, and although this year it’s a Leander/Leeds RC composite they won’t be hanging around. With Marlow RC racing both days, we can again highlight their second place and fifth place victories over Scullers and Oxford Brookes University. Upper Thames RC were safely in the B final along with Exeter University and London RC beating crews such as Nottingham RC.
Henley Royal Regatta again saw some of these crews racing such as Scullers, Nottingham University, and Thames RC/Neptune RC composite against Leander club in the final, with Leander taking the win by a length.
Summary
This year’s Women’s Championship Quads event for Met will be tough for both the Saturday and Sunday. We see plenty of clubs from all over the country vying for top position and to get solid racing practice before Henley Women’s Regatta and Henley Royal Regatta. For Saturday I predict Leander Club to win, followed closely by Marlow RC and then a tight run between Tideway Scullers and the Newcastle/Tyne ARC quad for third place.
For Sunday’s event, I predict the Leander/Leeds RC composite to take the win, followed by a tight mix of Marlow RC, Tideway Scullers and Nottingham University for second and third place. To all the best of luck and here’s to hoping for good weather.
