Metropolitan Regatta 2023 – Championship Women’s Quads Preview

The Metropolitan Regatta runs events on both Saturday and Sunday with a 1900m time trial followed by finals on the same day. This means many crews and athletes can double up events on each day. In total for the Women’s Championship Quad Sculls there are 13 entries on Saturday and 11 entries on Sunday. Six of these crews are racing both days; Thames RC ‘A’, Globe RC, De Montfort University BC, Upper Thames RC, Molesey BC and London RC.

Saturday

For Saturday’s racing we see two crews from Leander, including a boat with Becky Wilde in who has recently come back from representing Great Britain out in Duisburg, Germany. The University of Limerick RC, Ireland, has Niamh Coffey in the boat; she won the ‘B’ final at the European U23 championships back in September 2022 and will be part of a strong boat.

Thames RC have a quad consisting of Sina Schaefer, Anna Smart, Rachel Heap and Katherine Watson. These girls have all collectively raced at Henley Royal Regatta with Rachel in particular having represented Great Britain. Molesey BC have Héloïse Wormleighton in their quad, who came 41st at Great Britain trials in November 2022; she will no doubt be making the boat far stronger along with crew members Ella Toa who won gold in the quad at the 2019 U23 world championships, Holly Dunford who won gold at the 2021 World Championships along many other Great Britain vests, and Lisa Goossens who has represented The Netherlands and trained at Washington.

Sunday

With both the Molesey BC crew and the Thames RC ‘A’ racing on both days, competition will be tight. Again, we also see plenty of other crews doubling up, highlighting the intensity of the races and intent to win a category at Met Regatta.

On Sunday we have the addition of two Reading University BC quads. The Reading ‘A’ crew has Lauren Maddison, who has represented Great Britain as part of the U23 lightweight team. If this crew is similar to the one which ran at BUCS, it will also contain Lara Brittain (who has recently come back from Duisburg regatta representing Germany) Ellie Cooke and Finnola Stratton.

Predictions

I believe the Leander ‘A’ boat will win Saturday’s racing followed by Molesey BC and then Thames RC ‘A’ in third place. For Sunday, Molesey BC to win, with Reading University BC ‘A’ in second and Thames RC ‘A’ in third. However, competition for this category is extremely intense this year and will no doubt give us some interesting racing and even more interesting results. Best of luck ladies!
