With 41 entries and only two semi finals, the racing in this category on Sunday will be fierce from the off.
I have picked out the seven scullers that I believe have the best chance of reaching the final. Unfortunately the scullers at the Junior Inter-regional Regatta (JIRR) were not named, and so there is a bit of speculation on my part regarding the results there.
Marcus Jonas [Tideway Scullers School]
Marcus placed second in the J161x at the February GB Junior trials, and so has shown that he is capable of shifting a boat. I expect him to be a serious contender this weekend.
Tyler Skow [The American School in London]
Tyler placed sixth in the J161x at the aforementioned trials in Boston and has subsequently won the event at Hammersmith Amateur regatta. The ASL have produced some good results in small boats in the past, and Tyler looks like he will continue this tradition.
Ryan Morrison [Clydesdale]
Ryan was just behind Tyler in the Boston trials, placing seventh. I can’t find any other results of his since then, however, I expect that he has been training hard with fellow successful club member Giacomo Galano and that this would have brought him on.
James Beattie [King’s Worcester]
James placed 8th at the Boston assessment in J161x, a very creditable result. More recently, he placed third in his heat at Wallingford Regatta and I expect that training as part of a rather neat quad will have brought him on.
Cameron Forsythe [Leander]
Cameron sculled to a 5th place in J161x in the February trials in Boston, which is an indicator that he is a serious contender in this competition. Leander have a proud history of producing very handy junior scullers, so I am interested to see how Cameron fares on Sunday.
Alex Kelly [Thames]
Alex won the J161x event at the February trials and he emulated this performance at the JIRR-I believe (it was a Thames sculler)- taking home a gold medal. Can anyone beat him? We will see this weekend.
Joe Wolfin [Borlase]
There must be something in the water near the Borlase boathouse. Either that or they have simply cracked the formula for producing very strong athletes! Joe is no exception; he pulled a phenomenal 6.17 2k in March and so has a lot of power to draw upon. He placed 2nd in the E Final at the GB Junior small boats regatta in April, and is one to watch on Sunday.
