An event not as talked about as championship eights or quads but equally as brutal and competitive. A massive 40 scullers have entered this category with only 16 of them to qualify into the semi finals. A huge majority of these scullers are very experienced and many have been trialling for GB this year, which makes it of a very high standard and exciting to watch. I am going to cover the women I think will make the A final.
Tideway Scullers: Saunders – Meg Saunders is one of the top scullers this year, succeeding at trials, Munich International regatta and most recently at Wallingford regatta in J18 single sculls winning by over 10 seconds. This sculler has a lot of power and good technique behind her and will naturally be aiming for the gold medal on Saturday.
Warrington: Glover – Lucy Glover, like Meg, is a strong talented sculler who has also competed at Munich international regatta and GB Trials. Lucy won a gold medal in J16 girls singles last year, along with the JW1x titel at Henley Women’s Regatta, and I’m sure she will be looking to add to her NSR collection. With equal experience and drive I’m excited to see who wins between these two scullers.
Reading : Stevens – Another strong sculler with a lot of experience behind her, Annabel secured 8th place at GB February trials. Not only is Annabel a strong sculler but she is also talented and skilled in sweep sp her ability to feed her strength and technique throughout the various boat classes gives her an edge most scullers look for. Annabel will be tough to beat with her eyes set on gold.
Headington : Mattocks – India Mattocks most recently won J17 singles at Wallingford regatta, dominating the course she will race on Saturday. Though younger than some of their opponents, Headington have shown that their pristine technique and power can take on some of the toughest competition. I reckon India is looking to secure a competitive time on Saturday whilst fighting for a medal.
Putney High School: Andrews- Emma Andrews, similarly to Reading’s Annabel Stevens, is skilled in both sweep and sculling, with a lot of experience behind her. I reckon the biggest fight in the final is to secure a bronze medal and with 5 girls fighting for it, Emma will have to pull out all the stops.
Durham : Cessford – Hope Cessford has experience in both junior and senior racing for Durham Rowing Club. Yet another GB triallist this year, Hope knows how to tough it with the best of them. If she can hold good form and resilience throughout her time trail and semi finals, Hope could be in the running for a top 4 place in the final.
Nottingham: Holgate – Lucy Holgate is a strong crew rower, with experience from trials earlier in the year. Lucy will be out racing to show what times she can put down against some of the toughest competition. With success at last years Nationals Schools Regatta, Lucy should not be underestimated.
