The Championship Coxless Fours event is sure to produce competitive racing over the famous Dorney stretch. There are some very strong contenders with the likes of Henley Rowing Club, Latymer Upper School Boat Club, and Lady Eleanor Holles Boat Club competing for the top places.
Henley Rowing Club
This crew has some strong athletes competing as shown as a few girls made up a portion of the eight that competed recently at Wallingford Regatta. It will be interesting to see whether this strength can be transferred into the smaller crews with skill. This will be aided by the fact that the stroke girl, Phoebe Fletcher, stroked a crew in this event last year at National Schools’ Regatta to 3rd place and so she will have good experience in rhythm and racing. She will be looking to work up the medals and so it will be interesting to see if she can lead them to success.
Latymer Upper School Boat Club
This crew is well practiced and so this will be their major advantage over the other crews. This is because the stern pair of the boat, Georgina Seal and Selena Jones, raced together in this event last year at National Schools’ Regatta. They narrowly missed out on the medals in 4th place with 4 seconds after the Henley crew and so they will be hungry to change that this year to make it into the medals. This club has also entered a B crew and so this shows that there is a great breadth in the abilities of these athletes and so this club is a strong contender.
Lady Eleanor Holles Boat Club
This club comfortably won this event last year by 7 seconds but there are no returners to the crew. We have not seen any notable achievements from this club in the coxless fours so far this year. However, some of these girls had success at Wallingford Regatta with a 2nd place position so it will be interesting to see whether these skills are transferable as this factor will have a strong bearing on their result.
Prediction
We expect to see these three clubs competing for the top three spaces but there performance on the day will be down to the fitness and strength of the whole crew alongside the individual skill of the bow girl to steer the course as this is often an important factor in the results.
