National Schools’ Regatta 2019 – Junior 16 Girls Quads

One of the most fiercely contested categories in the entire roster, Junior 16 Girls Quads always produces a succession of captivating racing. Contenders this year include all the likely names, who have cultivated athletes on the cusp of making the step up to senior rowing.

Headington

This crew has some very strong athletes with two of the girls in the bow pair competed in the J16 category last year as J15s and so they will have some good racing experience which will be essential. This competitive spirit will be vital over this 2km course. In the middle pair of the crew there have been successes in similar events last year with Evie Holt winning the WJ15 4x+ and Isabelle Magee coming 3rd in the WJ14 4x+ which will serve them well in their competition this year.

Latymer

This club often produces some strong scullers that pursue medals into their senior years at both National Schools’ and Henley Women’s Regatta. It will be interesting to see whether these successes will be imitated in the younger years. Recently, this crew competed at Wallingford Regatta to a 4th position and so it will be interesting to see whether this crew can reach the medals.

Henley

This crew did not compete in the WJ16 4x- category at Wallingford and subsequently has seen no notable achievements so far this summer season. However, all of the athletes competed in the WJ15 8+ last year to achieve a win. Especially interesting is that Holly Cookson will also be stroking this year and so this may be important for the rhythm of the boat this year.

Wallingford

This club had a great achievement at Wallingford Regatta crew finishing in 2nd place after the South African Schools Rowing Union. However, there was a substantial gap of 15 seconds and so it will be interesting to see if this club can reclaim these seconds. Similarly to Henley, last year some of the girls, including the stroke girl Freya Sharp, competed in the J15 8+ but they had less success with only a 6th place position and so they will need to have developed their strength in order to ensure a top spot in this event.

This clubs through previous racing experience and general fitness and strength are expected to be competing for the top places but these overall results will be dependent on their determination and racing skills on the day of the event as it will reflect their full preparation for the day of racing.
