National Schools’ Regatta 2021 – Championship Boys Singles

This category is possibly the most mentally tough competition happening this weekend. Junior athletes will be battling it out for the Sculls Cup this Saturday. With no doubling up at this regatta, we see less entries as usual for the single, with just 23 entries, it will be interesting to see who comes out on top after an unique couple of years.

Hartpury University & College Boat Club – Fergus Woolnough – 223

With recently becoming a World Class Start rower Fergus has many wins throughout his junior career, standing at 6″8, these wins include: 1st at BRIC 2018, Qualifying for Henley Royal Regatta 2019  in the Fawley Challenge Cup at just J16, Gold in the J16 1x at Brit Champs 2019, Gold in the J18 4x at Brit Champs 2019, 4th at the GB Junior Trials back in November 2019 and 1st at BIRC 2019. As you can see Fergus had many successes before the COVID outbreak and it looks like he is hoping to continue these outstanding successes for the last part of his junior career as he has entered for this Saturday.

Exeter Rowing Club Ltd – Edward Fuller – 224

Edward Fuller, one of the rising prospects in junior rowing with having many successes at national level from a young age. These significant successes include: Bronze in the J14 1x at Junior inter-regional regatta 2017, a 3 time gold medallist in the double scull at Brit champs 2017, 2018 and 2019, Gold in the J15 2x at Junior inter-regional regatta 2018, Bronze at BIRC 2018, 2 wins in the double and single at GB J16 February trials, a gold in the J162x at National Schools 2019, 12th place in the JM1x at GB Junior trails back in November 2019 and a PR3 British record at BIRC online 2020. With all these successes under Fullers belt he is also hungry for more wins as he is entered for this Saturday.

Henley Rowing Club – Finlay Ribbons – 212

Finlay Ribbons, with moving to Henley Rowing Club from Peterborough, Finlay looks for an extra challenge with the move to Henley and being entered into this weekends racing. Ribbons is another great junior prospect with many successes under his belt when he was at Peterborough, these include qualifying for JIRR in 2019 in the double but then unfortunately the regatta getting cancelled. Ribbons is a very competent sculler and could finish at a high place this Saturday.

Prediction

With barely any racing in the past year these predictions can’t always be accurate, but with these very successful athletes I can imagine this outcome this Saturday

1st – Edward Fuller – 224
2nd – Fergus Woolnough – 223
3rd – Finlay Ribbons – 212
